Brevard, N.C.----The Brevard College women’s tennis team avenged a 2009 loss with a 6-3 South Atlantic Conference victory over visiting Wingate University Friday afternoon at the BC Tennis Complex. The Tornados are 9-2 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. The Bulldogs are 9-6 overall and 4-2 in the SAC. Wingate rallied for a 5-4 victory over Brevard last year.

Wingate junior Kara Stasikelis (Greer, S.C.) and freshman Kelli Ferguson (Concord, N.C.) started the day with an 8-5 victory at the number one doubles flight over Brevard junior Lindsay Shaeffer (Perrysburg, Ohio) and senior Kim Dixon (Charlotte, N.C.). The host Tornados won the number two and number three doubles matches 8-4 and 8-5.

Shaeffer earned a measure of revenge in singles play, collecting a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Stasikelis at the number one flight. Shaeffer improves her lifetime regular season record to 3-0 against Stasikelis. The two All-SAC performers had a three-set battle in 2008, with Shaeffer taking the third frame 6-3. She edged Stasikelis 7-5, 6-3 last year.

Wingate picked up singles victories at the number five and the number six positions. Bulldog sophomore Samantha Alschlager (Indian Trail, N.C.) defeated Dixon 6-2, 6-3 at the number five flight. Sophomore Ewa Opala (Redziny, Poland) survived BC freshman Elise Labus (Dunwoody, Ga.) 6-2, 7-5 at the number six flight.

Brevard won the top three singles matches in straight sets. In the number four singles match, BC senior Kayley Duval (Redding, Calif.) outlasted Wingate freshman Helen Goreski (Oakville, Ontario) 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8). The two combatants played a super tie-breaker in lieu of the third set.

The Bulldogs will continue their road trip Saturday, visiting SAC rival Mars Hill College for an 11 a.m. contest. In 2009, Wingate rallied for a 5-4 victory over the visiting MHC Lions on April 15.
