Wingate, N.C.----The West Virginia State University Yellow Jackets defeated the Bulldogs of Wingate University 11-7 in NCAA Division II baseball action Tuesday night at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The Yellow Jackets improve to 9-5 overall while Wingate falls to 15-10 on the season.
Freshman infielder Garret Kiser (St. Albans, W.Va.) was two-for-four with a double, five RBI and three runs scored to lead the WVSU offense. Senior designated hitter Ryne Holstine (S. Charleston, W.Va.) added a double and three RBI for the Yellow Jackets, while junior outfielder Bo Darby (Logan, W.Va.) was two-for-five with a homer.
Sophomore outfielder Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) was two-for-five with two triples and four RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Senior infielder Logan Isaacs (Raleigh, N.C.), junior designated hitter Tres Ramirez (Ocala, Fla.) and redshirt freshman first baseman Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) added two hits each for the Bulldogs.
The Yellow Jackets got things started in the fourth, plating four runs. Holstine had the big hit, a two-run double to left center to make it 3-0. Junior catcher Jeremy Fisher (Dover, Ohio) added an RBI single to push the lead to four.
West Virginia State added a run in the fourth on an RBI single from junior infielder Cody Dalton (Charlottesville, Va.) to make it 5-0.
Wingate plated its first run in the fifth, when Isaacs lined a two-out triple to right field, then scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to four.
The Yellow Jackets answered with three runs in the seventh, starting with a solo homer from Darby. Kiser added a two-run single to put WVSU on top 8-1.
The Bulldogs scored a pair of runs in the eighth, starting with an RBI triple from Allison. Ramirez added an RBI single to make it 8-3.
The Yellow Jackets scored three more runs in the ninth, starting with a two-run double from Kiser. Holstine drove in the final run for West Virginia State on an RBI single to push the lead to 11-3.
The Bulldogs scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to cut the final deficit to four. Yeung drove home the first run with an RBI single, while the other three scored on a three-run triple from Allison.
Sophomore right-hander Adam Garrison (Buffalo, W.Va.) got the win for the Yellow Jackets, improving to 1-0 on the year. He allowed one run on two hits in five innings of work while striking out three. Senior right-hander Dusty White (Charlotte, N.C.) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings of work while striking out six, falling to 2-2 on the season.
The Bulldogs and Yellow Jackets meet again Wednesday, with first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
