Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University women’s tennis team defeated Catawba College 5-1 in opening round action of the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament Tuesday afternoon at the WU Tennis Complex. The Bulldogs improve to 12-7 on the year. Catawba concludes the 2008-09 campaign 11-10 overall.
The Bulldogs swept the doubles action Tuesday afternoon. Wingate junior Hollyn Alberghini (Stanfield, N.C.) and sophomore Kara Stasikelis (Greer, S.C.) won 8-4 in number one doubles, topping the Catawba duo of sophomore Kasia Zielinski (Erie, Pa.) and freshman Jen Denyes (Bradenton, Fla.).
Wingate junior Pierce Dillard (Simpsonville, S.C.) and freshman Samantha Alschlager (Indian Trail, N.C.) earned an 8-5 win in number two doubles, while sophomore Zoe Hartas (Sydney, Australia) and freshman Ewa Opala (Redziny, Poland) won 8-2 in number three doubles action.
In singles action, Alschlager won 6-2, 6-0 in number five singles over Catawba freshman Candace Hall (Denver, N.C.) to give the host Bulldogs their fourth point. Opala prevailed 6-3, 7-5 over Catawba sophomore Jennifer Dameron (Siler City, N.C.) in the number six singles flight, clinching the match for the hosts. At this point, play was suspended as Wingate clinched the match with the fifth victory.
Wingate will face Carson-Newman in the Food Lion SAC semi-finals Friday afternoon in Rock Hill, S.C. The Eagles defeated Lincoln Memorial 6-1 Tuesday in Jefferson City.
