Savannah, Ga.----The Wingate University men’s and women’s swimming teams capped a dominant weekend by winning the 2009 SCAD Invitational, which concluded Saturday evening. The Wingate men finished with 1094.5 points, defeating second place Florida Southern, which finished with 537 points. The women posted 902 points, defeating second place Florida Southern by 233 points.
The men started the day with a 15-second victory in the 400 yard Freestyle. Three Bulldogs finished in the top four in the 200 IM, led by senior Kyle Corcoran (Kent, Wash.), who won the event with a time of 1:54.83. Corcoran notched a victory in the next event, finishing the 500 Freestyle in 4:40.83. Sophomore Lee Sousa (Cornelius, N.C.) took the title in the 200 Backstroke with a time of 1:53.95.
Wingate senior Mason Norman (Duluth, Ga.) won the 100 Breaststroke at 57.23. He also won the 100 Freestyle with a time of 45.25, edging teammate Daniel De Francisco (Cali, Colombia).
The women also started the day with a solid victory in the 400 Freestyle Relay, winning by over seven seconds. Sophomore Malin Kersmark (Malin-Bjarred, Sweden) won the 200 Backstroke with a time of 2:07.11. The Bulldogs notched the top two spots in the 200 Butterfly, with junior Sarah Supcoe (Charleston, W. Va.) finishing less than a second ahead of freshman Elly Speer (Manly, Sydney, Australia).
Wingate collected a second place finish in the 200 Medley Relay, the final event of the tournament. The team consisted of Kersmark, junior Nicole Moody (Grovetown, Ga.), junior Cheryl Vaccaro (Charlotte, N.C.) and senior Samantha Vencl (Wickliffe, Ohio).
