Bulldog women's basketball camp welcomes Wingate University alumni

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University head women’s basketball coach Barbara Nelson and her basketball campers welcomed alumni Direne Thomas, Cynthia Thomas Cooper and Tracy Williams to the school’s basketball camp Monday afternoon. Nelson runs the camp in conjunction with US Sports Camps and the Nike Basketball Camps.
Thirty-one campers had the opportunity to listen to the Thomas sisters and Williams share their college athletic and academic experiences. Direne Thomas is Wingate’s all-time leading scorer (male or female) with 3,141 points (1988-91). She is a member of the Wingate Sports Hall of Fame and South Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame.
Direne Thomas, Cynthia Thomas and Tracy Williams participated four years each in national tournament play. Direne Thomas and Tracy Williams and their 1987-88 teammates won 33 games in a row to start the season, advancing to the NAIA Final Four and compiling a 33-2 overall ledger. The University honored the 1987-88 Bulldogs as a Team of Distinction at the 2007 Wingate Sports Hall of Fame ceremonies.

Wingate University is ranked number three among NCAA Division II Academic All-America® producing schools in the 2000’s with 36 honorees during this millennium. Only Pittsburg State (Kan.) University and Truman State (Mo.) University have produced more Academic All-America® honorees during this time period. Wingate’s 45 Academic All-America® honorees (lifetime) is tops among all SAC schools.
