Bulldogs announce 2010-11 men’s basketball recruiting class

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University head men’s basketball coach Brian Good announces the signings of five student-athletes to study and play basketball at Wingate University for the 2010-11 season. The class includes Robert Carpenter (Fayetteville, N.C.), Corey Davis (Charlotte, N.C.), Andre Holder (St. George, Barbados), Jeff Parker (Madison, N.C.) and Jamaal Williams (Jacksonville, N.C.).

Carpenter is a 6-4 guard who played for head coach Bill Boyette at Terry Sanford High School, where he was a co-captain his senior season. The three-time All-Conference selection averaged 14 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.

Terry Sanford compiled a 59-5 overall record during Carpenter’s career, earning a pair of conference and regional titles and two runner-up finishes in the state tournament. He was an All-District selection in his final two seasons. Carpenter was named the MVP of the 2010 East Regional. He was sixth in the county in scoring and second in three-point field goals.

Davis is a 6-5 forward who played for head coach Will Sperow at Evelyn Mack Academy. He was a two-year team captain, averaging 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists per game as Evelyn Mack compiled a 10-10 overall record his senior year. Davis was an All-Conference selection at Hickory Grove Baptist Christian School in 2008.

Holder is a 6-9 forward who spent one year at St. Petersburg College, helping the team to a 21-9 overall record. He averaged 5.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game for head coach Earnest Crumbley. Holder attended high school at St. Michael’s School in Barbados. He will have two years of eligibility at Wingate.

Parker is a 6-7 forward who played for head coach Randel Galloway at McMichael High School. The two-time All-Conference selection averaged 13.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per game in his senior season. The Fighting Phoenix were 13-11 overall during Parker’s senior campaign.

Williams is a 6-0 point guard who played for head coach Tommy Barnes at Southwest Onslow High School. He was a four-year captain for basketball team. Williams averaged 29.3 points, 9.1 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game, leading his team to a 21-4 overall record during his senior basketball season.

An All-Conference and All-County selection in 2010, Williams was selected to participate in the North Carolina East-West All-Star game. Williams was named the team MVP all four years at Southwest Onslow, while earning team MVP honors his final season on the football team.

“I am extremely excited about this incoming class,” Good says. “In addition to possessing talent that will help us achieve our basketball goals, these guys are also quality young men.”

Good believes this class has what it takes to accept the job at hand. “I can also say this is a special class because of their willingness to accept the challenge of competing with a roster that is already filled with talented underclassmen,” Good adds.

The Bulldogs return four of five starters from their 2009-10 team. “When your current starting line-up consists of the (South Atlantic Conference) Freshman of the Year, two All-Freshmen team members and an All-SAC second team sophomore...your incoming recruits need to be confident, but willing to work for their opportunities. This group possesses these qualities.”
