Bulldogs top Knights 14-5 for fifth straight victory

The Wingate University Bulldogs collected their fifth consecutive win, defeating the Knights of St. Andrews Presbyterian College 14-5 in NCAA Division II baseball action Tuesday afternoon. Wingate improves to 20-10 overall, while the Knights fall to 8-28-1 on the year. The Bulldogs have scored 80 runs in their five-game winning streak.

Sophomore outfielder Dodson McPherson (Graham, N.C.) was three-for-five with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate attack. Sophomore shortstop Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, Ga.) added three hits and two runs scored for the Bulldogs. Senior infielder Logan Isaacs (Raleigh, N.C.) and redshirt freshman first baseman Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) each homered for Wingate, combining to drive in four runs.

The Bulldogs got on the board quickly, scoring three runs in the first. Vazquez led off the game with a double, extending his hitting streak to 17 games. He would score the game’s first run on an error. Junior designated hitter Tres Ramirez (Ocala, Fla.) added a two-run single to make it 3-0.

After the Knights cut the lead to two in the bottom of the first, Isaacs pushed the lead back to three with his sixth homer of the year, a solo shot to make it 4-1. The Bulldogs added three more runs in the third on a three-run homer from Yeung (his second homer of the season) to give Wingate a 7-1 advantage.

An RBI double from senior infielder Josh Axelsen (St. Charles, Ill.) made it 7-2 in the third. Wingate again had the answer, scoring twice in the fourth. Sophomore infielder Jacob Karr (Richmond, Va.) drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly. Sophomore outfielder Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) added an RBI single to make it 9-2. Wingate took a 10-3 lead when sophomore catcher Josh Sugg (Raleigh, N.C.) scored on an error in the fifth.

The Bulldogs added four more runs in the eighth. McPherson drove home the first two with a two-run shot to right, his fourth homer of the year. Redshirt senior outfielder Nick Siega-Riz (Clemmons, N.C.) drove home the final two runs of the game with a two-run single.

Junior left-hander Cale Rogers (Snow Camp, N.C.) got the win for the Bulldogs, improving to 2-1 overall on the year. He allowed five runs on 11 hits in six innings of work, while striking out five. Junior right-hander DJ Stinsman (Egg Harbor, N.J.) took the loss, allowing nine runs on 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings of work, falling to 0-3 ooverall on the season.

The Bulldogs are back in action Wednesday, traveling to Limestone College for a 3 p.m. start. Wingate returns home Friday, hosting Lincoln Memorial University Friday evening at 5 p.m. The two teams meet Saturday for a doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m. The Wingate Sports Network will cover the South Atlantic Conference doubleheader Saturday with a live PPV video broadcast. St. Andrews returns to action Friday, hosting Pfeiffer at 12 noon.
