Perry, N.Y.----Wingate University senior defense Evan Schaller (Kirkville, N.Y.) adds another honor to his trophy case this week, as the four-year starter was named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Scholar All-America team. Schaller is only the second student-athlete in Wingate’s lacrosse history to earn this prestigious distinction.

The USILA Scholar All-America program was established in 1989 to recognize student-athletes from USILA member institutions who have distinguished themselves academically, athletically and as citizens of their communities. The USILA Selection Committee chooses an overall team representing NCAA Divisions I, II and III.

The 2009 USILA Scholar All-America team includes only 53 men’s lacrosse student-athletes from NCAA Divisions I, II and III. The list includes seven NCAA Division II student-athletes, including three from NCAA Division II national champion C.W. Post. Thirty-four institutions play NCAA Division II lacrosse. Schaller is the only Deep South Conference (DSC) student-athlete to make the USILA Scholar All-America team.

Evan Schaller graduated with honors during Wingate’s May commencement exercises. An Accounting major, he holds a 3.84 GPA. Earlier this month, Schaller was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III at-large first team (college division), as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

On the playing field, Schaller was named to the USILA NCAA Division II All-America second team in 2009. An All-DSC choice his final two seasons, Schaller led the Bulldogs with 63 ground balls his senior year. In addition, he posted one goal and two assists during the 2009 campaign. Schaller was a four-year starter for the Bulldogs.

In 2008, Schaller had a career-high 96 ground balls as he helped the Bulldogs post an 11-3 overall record. Wingate allowed only 8.20 goals per game in 2008, ninth in the NCAA in scoring defense.

Schaller was named to the All-DSC tournament team in 2007 and 2008. During his Bulldog career, Schaller and his teammates won 40 games. Wingate has won or shared the Deep South Conference regular season title in 2006, 2007 and 2008. The Bulldogs won the DSC tournament crown in 2007.

In the fall of 2007, Schaller spent the semester in London as part of the University’s Wingate-in-London program. He was an active member of the Bulldog campus community during his Wingate career. Schaller has served as a tutor and a manager in Wingate’s Academic Resource Center, helping run the center and also tutoring students in accounting and religion. Schaller has also participated in the Up ‘til Dawn fund-raiser to benefit St. Jude’s Hospital.
