Wingate, N.C.----Four new members will be added to an impressive list during the Wingate University Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremonies on Saturday morning, October 31. Baseball first baseman Jeremy Byers (class of 1995), men’s soccer standout Kirk Calvert (class of 1971), softball pitcher Angela Curlew Lampley (class of 1999) and basketball power forward Andrea McCloud (class of 1982) will join 64 other Bulldog luminaries in the University’s Sports Hall of Fame.

For the fourth year in a row, the Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremonies will be a part of the Wingate University athletic department gala. In addition to the Sports Hall of Fame festivities, the athletic department will sponsor a silent auction before the induction ceremonies and a live auction at the conclusion of the evening.

In addition to the four Sports Hall of Fame inductions, the Wingate University athletic department will honor three Teams of Distinction at the brunch. The Teams of Distinction for 2009 include the 1995 baseball team (coached by Bill Nash) and the 1994-95 and the 1995-96 women’s tennis teams (coached by Dr. Lynn Moss).

Byers and his Wingate teammates helped the baseball Bulldogs achieve the number one ranking in the NCAA Division II during the 1995 season. A three-year All-South Atlantic Conference performer, Byers earned the league’s Freshman of the Year award in 1992. His career statistics line includes 19 home runs, 120 RBI and a .368 batting average.

The Wingate baseball team won the SAC title in 1994 and 1995, earning trips to the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional tournament both years. Wingate’s combined record for the 1994 and 1995 seasons was 83-26 overall. The 1995 SAC tournament MVP, Byers was named to the All-Region team the same year. Byers played for head coaches Dr. Ron Christopher and Bill Nash.

Calvert is the first junior college soccer player to be inducted into the Wingate University Sports Hall of Fame. Calvert was named to the NJCAA All-Region team in 1970 and 1971. His head coach was fellow WU Sports Hall of Fame member Ron Smarr.

A two-year team captain for the Bulldogs, Calvert transferred to Emory (Ga.) University following his time at Wingate. He was the team MVP and team captain for the Eagles in 1972.

Angela Curlew Lampley earned All-SAC honors four years in a row for the Bulldogs. The 1995 SAC Freshman of the Year, Curlew’s career pitching record is 60-40 overall. Wingate earned 60 total victories her junior and senior seasons.

In 1997, Curlew won 20 games during her junior campaign. Thanks to the efforts of Curlew and her teammates, Wingate earned second place in the SAC standings her freshman and senior seasons. Her coaches were Scott Behe and Michelle Caddigan.

Curlew’s husband Danny Lampley (SHOF class of 2004) is also a member of the Wingate University Sports Hall of Fame. The Lampleys are the first husband-and-wife duo to earn this distinction. Danny Lampley and Jeremy Byers were teammates in 1995, when Wingate compiled a 46-10 overall record and spent one week as the number one team in the nation.

Andrea McCloud was a four-year starter for the men’s basketball team. He earned All-Carolinas Conference honors his junior and senior seasons (1980-81, 1981-82).
